Paracanthurus hepatus

The Regal Tang has been described as ‘the bluest thing on earth’. This tang is ideally suited to the smaller sea aquarium, since it becomes adult at 4in (10cm). It is probably a schooling fish on the Philippino reefs where most specimens come from, and so does not object to the company of members of tis own species. Even a small sea aquarium of 36 x 18 x 18in (90 x 45 x 45cm), i.e., 40 gallons (180 litres), can safely house two or three specimens at 1½ to 2in (4 to 5cm).

After its introduction to the aquarium, the Regal Tang or Flagtail Surgeonfish, usually goes into a state of mild shock and will frequently terrify its new owner by lying flat on the gravel under a stone or coral head, or leaning against the side of the tank. However, provided that the over-anxious aquarist can desist from prodding and poking the frightened fish, assuming of course that the water is in good condition without even a trace of nitrite content, the hardy little fellow will always rally round.
