| Acanthurus bleekeri This species is restricted in its distribution to the Red Sea area, wher
it is never common, and so it is a fairly expensive fish to buy. It is sometimes known as
the Srtiped Surgeonfish. It is not only one of the most graceful and beautifully coloured
of the coral fishes, but it is also undoubtedly one of the most undemanding. Its
advantages are weakened only by the fact that many specimens become increasingly
intolerant of certain other species as they reach the three-to four-year-old stage. A
three-year-old Majestic Surgeonfish I own has recently dispatched an adult batfish (Platax
teira) and an adult Pomacanthus annularis. Both of the attacked fishes were large and
powerful and had lived with the surgeonfish for the previous two years. The fishes were
killed during the night and were found the following morning covered in wounds from the
sharp scalpels of the surgeonfish.
