| Holocentrus The soldierfishes or squirrelfishes are primarily nocturnal fishes. This
is indicated by their large eyes and, perhaps less obviously, by their bright red
coloration. Most nocturnal reef fishes are predominately red in colour. A soldierfish is a
voracious predator and must never be trusted in community with fishes small enough to be
accommodated in the capacoius mouth. However, once a specimen is well adjusted to aquarium
life, it will learn to accept chunks of flesh provided that it can see the food falling
through the water. Few members of this genus will take static food particles from the
floor of the aquarium, no matter how hungry they are.
