| Mullidae The goatfishes of the genus Pseudupeneus rank with the Striped Catfish
(Plotosus anguillaris) and the Spotted Ray (Dasyatis kuhlii), as the few bottom scavengers
suitable for the average-sized marine tank. However, the goatfishes are noted for their
beauty of form, though both the red and yellow species are very strikingly coloured. As
befits most scavenging organisms, they have a very wide taste in food-stuffs. Food that no
other self-respecting coral fish would swim anywhere near is frequently snapped up from
the bottom with a relish not easily disguised. However, this readiness of the fishes to
dispose of surplus food must not be an excuse for laxness in tank management. Decaying
organic matter lying around on the aquarium floor will not benefit in the long run either
the goatfishes or any other occupants of the tank.
