| Cephalopholis argus The wide range of this species has given rise to some variation in
colouring, but broadly speaking the reddish-brown background colour scattered with bright
blue circles, is typical of the species. Like all the groupers, it swims slowly by
alternate movements of the pectoral fins using only the powerful back muscles to thresh
the tail fin when the forward-lunge mechanism is triggered. In this respect the feeding
habits of the groupers are very similar to those of the freshwater pike. In captivity, the
grouper quickly realises that continued taking of small fishes for food is a hungry
policy, and after a few days it is quite ready to receive small chunks of any kind of
flesh.
