This grouper is a rare and treasured beauty in British aquarists
tanks for it is hardly ever imported into Great Britain. It is not rare in the wild but
collectors experience extreme difficulty in extracting it from its lair and at the same
time retraining all their fingers intact.
The fishs control of body colour is highly developed, perhaps more then any other
grouper. When at rest, it is a most uninspiring russet-brown colour with the slightest
hint of blue spots liberally scattered on the body. If a small live fish is introduced
into the tank, a miraculous change in appearance occurs. Almost imperceptibly and then
with gathering momentum, the fishs whole body becomes suffused with an indescribable
shade of red. Small islets of sapphire blue radiate a strange glow as the fishs body
pulsates with light a few seconds before the grouper-lunge. On the completion
of this act the colours subside and until the next meal time, peace reigns in the tank.
