This species, also known as the Lineated
Butterfly fish, is probably the most beautiful fish in the whole genus. Unfortunately,
however, it is also the most exasperating for it frequently refuses all normal foods
offered to it in captivity. The following notes may be of use to aquarists attempting to
keep this difficult fish for the first time.
Firstly, a large specimen should be obtained, between 3 and 4in (7 and 10cm) which is
extremely fat. A butterfly fish of any species which is narrow behind the head
should never be bought. Secondly, a large, approximately 80 gallon (360 litre) aquarium
should be used with pre-aged synthetic sea water and a great deal of rockwork and coral
formations. Feeding should start with live coral heads, followed by half-grown shrimp
larvae and, after a few weeks, the fishes should be weaned on to vitamin-soaked
freeze-dried brine shrimps or Mysis.
