| Pomacanthus
semicirculatus This species of angelfish is found more
frequently than any other in home marine aquaria. It is a very successful species, ranging
from East Africa across the Indo-Pacific to Ceylon and into the Pacific Ocean to the
Philippines. Unlike many other marine fishes with a wide range, there is surprisingly
little variability in colour and form within the species. It is almost impossible to
differentiate between a specimen from Kenya and one from the Philippines. However,
although little variation is seen among adult fishes, the variation in colour pattern
among developing juveniles within this genus is amazing. Below are shown some phases in
the development. This phenomenon has created a great deal of confusion in the ranks of
amateur taxonomists. Animals of the same species but at different stages of development
have been named as a new species, and even attributed to different families.
Once acclimatised to the aquarium, which rarely takes more than two
to three days, the Koran Angelfish is an excellent aquarium fish accepting all foods with
rewarding eagerness. Unfortunately it is somewhat prone to White spot disease, but this
protozoan infection is easily cleared with appropriate medication, i.e. Cuprazin (no
invertebrates) or Myxazin.
