Pomacanthus imperator

The adult of this species is one of the most spectacular marine fishes. When familiar with its surroundings, the Emperor or Imperial Angelfish moves effortlessly around the sea aquarium with a sense of majesty and circumstance which prompted early German marine aquarists to bestow the name ‘Kaiserfische’ on the species.

The Emporer Angelfish is a little more demanding than the previous species with regard to water quality and even the slightest trace of nitrite in the water seems to quickly debilitate the animal, making it prone to disease which it would otherwise resist. Benedenia is a commonly seen infection among newly imported specimens, or those kept in less than perfect sea water. This is easily cured if the animal is promptly transferred to exceptionally clean water and treated with Cuprazin or sodium sulphamezathine – dosage: one teaspoonful of solution to 10 gallons (45 litres) of water. If the latter treatment is used, the fish should be transferred to fresh sea water five days after the disappearance of symptoms, to avoid massive kidney damage which may otherwise result. Live foods may be necessary to tempt the Emperor Angelfish to begin feeding in captivity, but it will soon move on to various forms of fresh protein.
